“Greatest production since the birth of motion pictures!” A stunning stone lithography poster for the 1945 MGM musical extravaganza Ziegfeld Follies, with artwork inspired by pin-up artist George Petty. Looking down from heaven, showman Florenz Ziegfeld fondly recalls his first Broadway revue, the Ziegfeld Follies of 1907, and fantasises about staging one last spectacular show. With an all-star line up including Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland and Lucille Ball, the movie takes the form of an old-fashioned revue with a sequence of unrelated sketches and lavish musical numbers, showcasing the best of MGM talent. Although a similar format, Australian day bills are significantly rarer than US insert posters.
Condition
Excellent (A-)
Backed on linen. Prior to backing this poster had two horizontal machine folds with minor splits to fold lines and some darkening to edges.. Backing and light colour touching has smoothed and diminished the folds. Image and colours excellent.
