An original concert handbill by Seattle rock photographer Saulius Pempe for a performance by the Jimi Hendrix Experience at the Seattle Center Coliseum on Friday 6th September, 1968, with support from Vanilla Fudge, Soft Machine and Eire Apparent. After his breakthrough US performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Jimi returned to his hometown of Seattle as a rock superstar. The setlist for the homecoming concert included Purple Haze, Foxey Lady, Hey Joe, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Wild Thing, and closed with a showstopping rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner - one of Hendrix's earliest known performances of the anthem. Decades later, Jimi's sister Janie, who was in the audience that night with their father, recalled their reaction to the performance: Total fear ran through our veins. My dad thought Jimi was going to be arrested. When he played The Star Spangled Banner, he took something which was very sacred to the American people and put his stamp on it. Even though it was beautiful, at that time nobody had ever done anything like that. We feared the authorities would chuck Jimi in prison and throw away the key... It was almost like setting fire to the American flag. Nobody does that.
