With her trusty umbrella, Mary Poppins gracefully soars above the misty London skyline on this enchanting poster for the first Hungarian release of Walt Disney's classic musical fantasy in 1986. Although Western films were shown during the Soviet era in the Communist Bloc, American publicity materials were banned, allowing the state-commissioned artists to operate with total creative freedom from the demands of the big Hollywood studios. Far superior to any artwork created for the US or UK poster campaigns, Berta Gábor's quirky impressionist illustration mirrors the painterly appearance of the movie, which was shot entirely at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, using painted London background scenes.
A practically perfect Julie Andrews sparkles in her legendary feature film debut as the fictional super-nanny, based on P. L. Travers's book series of the same name. Mysteriously descending from the windy London skies into the home of two mischievous children, the spirited Mary Poppins turns every chore into a game and every day into a Jolly Holiday with the help of Dick Van Dyke's carefree chimneysweep Bert, finally reconnecting the Banks children with their disfunctional parents. Released in 1964 to universal critical acclaim, the film received a staggering 13 Academy Award nominations – a record for any film released by Walt Disney Studios – and won five, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews and Best Original Musical Score. A combination of live-action and animation, Mary Poppins is widely regarded as Walt Disney's crowning live-action achievement, and the only one of his feature films to earn a Best Picture nomination during his lifetime.
