A sweet and surprisingly rare British Double Crown character poster for a 1980s re-release of the beloved Walt Disney classic Bambi. First released in 1942, the touching tale of a young fawn destined to be Prince of the Forest was the fifth animated picture to be released by Disney and was critically acclaimed for its graceful animation and lush hand painted forest scenes. Generations of viewers might cite the shocking death of Bambi’s mother at the hands of an anonymous hunter, symbolising Man's cruel destruction of nature, as their lasting association with the film, yet the story endures as as a celebration of life and the cycle of nature. In 2008, the American Film Institute named Bambi the third best film in the animation genre. It's likely that this poster, depicting the titular Bambi as the young Prince of the Forest, was produced as part of a set of character posters with Bambi's woodland friends, although they appear to be spectacularly rare and we have only come across an example of Thumper, named as a zany cottontail comedian and Bambi's constant companion.
Condition
Excellent (A-)
Backed on linen in the European style with no restoration whatsoever. Prior to backing this poster had one vertical and one horizontal machine fold as issued with light wear to folds and minor nicks and creases to corners and edges. Backing has smoothed and diminished the appearance of folds and creases for display. Tiny dot stain to lower left edge. Image and colours otherwise excellent.
