An early attempt by Hollywood to process the trauma of Vietnam, Michael Cimino's unflinching 1978 war epic The Deer Hunter has endured as a key cinematic examination of the conflict. Starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep in her first significant role, the film follows a tight-knit trio of small town Pennsylvania steelworkers whose lives are torn apart by their harrowing tour of duty. Despite criticism for its graphic violence, the film was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won five, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Walken. Referencing the film's controversial Russian roulette scene, this striking poster was originally intended to advertise the British release until distributors decided it was too disturbing and opted for a more muted design. It is believed that most of the withdrawn 'Russian roulette' style posters were destroyed and very few copies remain.
