A rare British quad for the first instalment of George Lucas' original, genre-defining, sci-fi trilogy 'Star Wars'. When the studio realized how successful the first film was going to be, they commissioned Tom Chantrell to create this bold, action packed design for the British campaign. Considered the best poster artwork created for the 1977 film, Chantrell's design has become synonymous with the franchise, also featuring on the Style C US One Sheet poster. Chantrell often used his family as models for his poster artwork; for this design, his wife posed as Princess Leia in their garden with a plastic sword. Weeks after this poster was issued in the UK, 'Star Wars' was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning 7, and the poster was subsequently reprinted with the Oscar credits. This is the rare pre-Oscar version that is most eagerly sought after by collectors.
Provenance
Archivally backed on linen. Prior to backing this poster had one horizontal and three vertical folds as issued, with an additional partial double horizontal fold 1.5in. below the central horizontal, minor edge wear and a couple of light creases to corners. Backing and light color touching to folds has smoothed and diminished the fold lines for display. Faint brownish spot to 'R' in 'WARS'. Very light blunt score from upper edge through 'R' in 'STAR', which is not particularly noticeable or distracting. Image and colors otherwise excellent - a fantastic example of this sought after poster.
