Although Western films were shown during the Soviet era in the Communist Bloc, American publicity materials were banned, allowing the state-commissioned artists to operate with total creative freedom from the demands of the big Hollywood studios, offering quirky interpretations which often had no reference to the film. Maciej Hibner designed this simply stunning poster for Jacques Demy's 1961 French New Wave drama Lola for the film's first release in Poland in 1967, easily surpassing all other artwork produced for the film. Starring Anouk Aimée as cabaret dancer Lola, the wistful love story was director Jacques Demy's feature length debut - he would go on to direct The Umbrellas of Cherbourg three years later.
