Although Western films were shown during the Soviet era in the Communist Bloc, American publicity materials were banned, allowing the state-commissioned artists to operate with total creative freedom from the demands of the big Hollywood studios, offering quirky interpretations which often had little reference to the film. With a design that owes much to the surrealist work of M C Escher, Andrzej Pagowski's fantastically bizarre poster for the original Polish release of 1988 rom-com drama Working Girl features a female figure clad in a 1980s cocktail dress, climbing in killer heels to the top of a staircase formed from the head of a suited man. Starring Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver, the tale of a Staten Island secretary making waves in the big city by taking on the identity of her boss was a box office smash and scored six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress for Griffith and Best Supporting Actress for both Weaver and Joan Cusack.
