Based on the book by Thomas E. Gaddis, John Frankenheimer's Birdman of Alcatraz offered a sentimentalised account of the life of convicted murderer Robert Stroud, who became a renowned self-taught ornithologist while serving a solitary life sentence in an unforgiving federal prison. With much of the action set at Leavenworth Prison, Stroud was eventually transferred to Alcatraz where he was not permitted to keep his beloved birds. Burt Lancaster was Oscar-nominated for his masterful performance in the title role, regarded as one of the finest of his career, but lost out to Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird. Witht he tagline Inside the rock called Alcatraz they tried to chain a volcano they called The Bird Man! The US One Sheet poster features bold and effective artwork in the style of American graphic designer Saul Bass.
Condition
Very good (B)
Backed on linen. Backing has smoothed and diminished one vertical and three horizontal machine folds and a few minor nicks and creases to corners and edges. Some pinholes scattered through white ground and approximately four pinholes through artwork which are not very noticeable or distracting. The most minor colour touching to pinholes. Some darkening to upper edge. Image and colours otherwise excellent.
