A dark and moody photomontage teases the love triangle at the centre of the drama on this rare poster for the first Romanian release of Elia Kazan's 1955 adaptation of John Steinbeck's 'East of Eden,' which was itself a loose adaptation of the biblical story of Cain and Abel. Set in early 20th Century California and focusing on the fourth and final part of Steinbeck's 1952 novel, the film starred a brooding James Dean as wayward son Cal, who finds himself competing against his favoured brother Aron for the approval of their deeply religious father, as well as the affections of Aron's girfriend Abra. Dean's performance foreshadowed his role as an angst-ridden youth in 'Rebel Without A Cause,' although 'East of Eden' would be the only film starring Dean to be released in his lifetime. Following his tragic death in September 1955, Dean was nominated posthumously for the 1956 Academy Awards as Best Actor for his performance as Cal.
